The
ALL-NEW White Sands International Film Festival 2008 Will Be Held in
Alamogordo, New Mexico on March 16 – 22, 2008
For its fourth year, The White Sands
International Film Festival (WSIFF) offers a uniquely diverse
program of cinema, panels, and workshops. Set in Alamogordo with
some events in Ruidoso, it promises to draw a widespread audience
from El Paso to Albuquerque and all of southern New Mexico. This
year it features innovative films from American and Latino artists
of distinction. It screens movies in several competitive
categories—narrative and documentary, long and short.
The festival’s unique appeals are its geographic location and
cultural heritage. Events occur at three venues, the new Allen
Theater complex and the Space History Museum in Alamogordo, plus the
Spencer Theatre in Ruidoso/Alto. The Festival also invites attendees
to enjoy the beautiful country, facilities, and pursuits that grace
southern New Mexico. The proximity of Alamogordo and Las Cruces to
Mexico establishes one of its important aims: the encouragement of
artistic exchange between filmmakers and audiences in the United
States and Mexico.
Besides screenings of the best competitive films, some featured
events are:
Lifetime Achievement Award to famous Mexican filmmaker Arturo
Ripstein,
Screenings of established films—Bella with Eduardo Verástegui, He
Was a Quiet Man with Christian Slater, Seraphim Falls with Pierce
Brosnan, Around the Bend with Michael Caine, and La Reina de la
Noche Patricia Reyes Spíndola.
Attendees have opportunities to meet such film luminaries as:
Alejandro Gomez Monteverde director of Bella,
Arturo Ripstein director of La Reina de la Noche,
David Flynn producer of Seraphim Falls (shot in New Mexico),
Elliott Lewitt producer of Around the Bend (shot in New Mexico).
Master classes and panels such as the following are offered:
Swashbuckling for the Silver Screen with fight director J.R.
Beardsley,
Writing for Film with noted Latino screenwriter Paz Alicia Garcia
Diego
Casting to be Remembered with Angelique Midthunder and Carmen
Martinez.
Conversation with David Flynn, UTA Agent for Cohen Brothers & Steven
Soderbergh.
Jan Wafful, of the Otero County Film Office, and numerous local
volunteers are working hard to make sure that at WSIFF filmmakers
have the opportunity to learn, grow, and exhibit their work.
Audiences can relish the pleasures of marvelously entertaining and
creative movies plus mixing with those who create them. The joyous
Southwestern celebration of movies at the White Sands International
Film Festival takes place in Alamogordo the week of March 16-22.
Come and join us.
